The National Advisory Committee on Drugs has criticised standards of mental care for people with addiction problems in Ireland.

In a report published today, the committee said access to mental health services was limited for people with drug problems and the co-ordination of mental health care and addiction services needed to improve.

The committee said guidelines were needed to establish consistency in the assessment and care of people with "dual diagnosis", while improved training and education was also needed across all disciplines in the mental health care and addiction services sectors.
