Alan Hughes proposed live on Ireland AM this morning

Congratulations are in order for Ireland AM presenter Alan Hughes as he proposed to his long-term partner live on air this morning.

As the 34th Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Act 2015 was passed in Ireland on Friday, the morning chat show decided to do a feature on how things have changed in Ireland over the last 20 years.

On the panel were Colm O’Gorman, Karl Broderick (Alan’s Partner) and Alan himself.

Little did Karl know what was about to happen:

The couple, who are already civil partnered, were chatting to Sinead Desmond and Mark Cagney when Alan got down on one knee and proposed to Karl live on air - and of course he said "Yes".

Watch the moment here.

Alan and Karl have been together for 22 years and were civil partnered on September 30, 2011 in the Unitarian Church followed by a party afterwards in the Mansion House.

Speaking today after proposing to long term partner Karl, Alan said: "I just felt it was the right time with the week that’s in it, with the passing of the Marriage Bill.

"Karl proposed to me after Celebrity Salon and I just felt this was the right time to make my feelings clear to him – and what better place than the Ireland AM set, which is very much like home, surrounded by my TV family.”

Congrats guys!
