The Gardai have set up thousands of checkpoints and speed-traps in an effort to prevent the usual spate of road deaths over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Motorists have been warned to expect delays because of the operation, which will focus mainly on motorcyclists and young drivers.

12 people died on Ireland's roads over last year's Bank Holiday weekend.
