Govt ‘considering renewal of McCabe commitment’
The Government is reportedly considering renewing its commitment not to release the killers of Garda Jerry McCabe before they have served their full sentences.
Reports this morning said the GRA had requested that the commitment be renewed during a meeting yesterday with Justice Minister Michael McDowell.
The GRA reportedly asked Mr McDowell to send a letter to Garda McCabe’s widow assuring her that the Government’s earlier commitment on the IRA killers still stood.
The minister apparently agreed to discuss the matter with the Taoiseach, but a final decision may not be forthcoming until next Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
Earlier this week, the Taoiseach said the release of the four men convicted of manslaughter in connection with Garda McCabe’s death would be considered in the context of a deal to end all IRA activity.
