Brazil has been chosen by the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) as its sole candidate to host the 2014 World Cup.

Ten days ago, FIFA announced that the finals would return to South America for the first time since Argentina held the tournament in 1978.

Now the Conmebol Executive Committee have given Brazil, five-times world champions, their unanimous support to stage the competition.

“The 10 countries from the South American Football Confederation decided to choose Brazil as the 2014 World Cup organiser in a unanimous decision,” Conmebol president Nicolas Leoz confirmed.

Brazil have been World Cup hosts once before, in 1950, when Uruguay beat them in the final.
