Garbage rocker Shirley Manson banned a surgeon from removing a potentially cancerous growth from her vocal cords - because he warned the operation could threaten her singing abilities.
The Androgyny star confesses she's so passionate about her music, she ignored a suspicious cyst because surgery could have damaged her voice.
But fortunately, she found a New York doctor who was able to treat the lump in her throat, and send her home for just three weeks of recuperation, with her vocal cords intact.
She explains: "One specialist said, 'We're going to cut this off, but you need to know that there are serious risks involved. We may have to squeeze your vocal cords.' At which point, I was immediately like, 'I don't want to have anything to do with you. I'm not going to sound the same again.'
"It was a risk, but it all worked out in the end."
