HSE suspends admission of patients at five nursing homes

The Health Service Executive has suspended the admission of new patients to at least five nursing homes following recent inspections of the facilities.

The homes in question are located in Dublin and Co Wicklow.

The HSE says it is satisfied with the level of care for patients who are already in the homes and is simply suspending further admissions until certain matters are addressed.

The issues identified by the inspections are believed to include staff levels and training, particularly the ability of some homes to look after highly dependant patients like Alzheimer’s sufferers.

The Irish Nursing Homes Organisation says it has serious questions about the HSE decision as the existing system of inspection is vague and open to interpretation.
