Fine Gael's newest recruit Eamon Coghlan has said there are days when he believes the Seanad should be retained.
The former Olympian was one of the Taoiseach's nominees to the upper house last year, sitting on the Independent bench. He has now applied to join the Fine Gael party.
The Government has committed to hold a referendum on the abolition of the Seanad, but Senator Coghlan said he had mixed views on whether the upper house should be scrapped.
"There are certain days when I'd say: 'What's happening in here?' when various debates take place, and there are other days when people do question what's going on in the Dáil and I'd say yes, (the Seanad) should be saved."
He said in any case, the question would be put to the people as part of the programme for government.
