Labour: Minister should apologise to Tania McCabe

The Labour Party is calling on Health Minister Mary Harney to apologise to the family of Tania McCabe.

The Labour Party is calling on Health Minister Mary Harney to apologise to the family of Tania McCabe.

The 34-year-old garda sergeant died at Our Lady Lourdes Hospital last year after giving birth to twins by emergency Caesarean section.

One of the babies also died soon after.

A report into the deaths has blamed poor communication, staff shortages and a systems failure at the hospital.

It says doctors failed to diagnose that Mrs McCabe's waters had broken days before she gave birth.

Labour's health spokesperson Jan O'Sullivan says this is inexcusable and the minister must take responsibility as it is her fault that hospitals are working under major pressure.
