Supermarket giant Asda announced plans today to create at least 250 jobs at a new outlet in Larne provided the North's planning service gives it the green light to build.

Highlighting rising unemployment largely driven by pay-offs in the construction industry, it said getting the go-ahead for a store with 30,000 sq ft of sales space would help alleviate the employment problems in the Co Antrim town.

Philip Bartram, property communications manager at Asda, said: “It is important that all efforts are made to support investments that create jobs in Northern Ireland.

“This will be a key benefit of our Larne store. It will also help the construction sector who will build our store and our other planned stores throughout Northern Ireland.”

Asda is planning its new supermarket at Redlands Road in Larne as part of a wider development including a multiplex cinema and restaurants.

Mr Bartram said: “Present economic difficulties mean a quick turnaround of our application is vital. We have a minimum of 250 new jobs available for local people and we will work closely with local job agencies to target local job seekers.”
