The combined work of 40 gardaí in Cork city and west Cork led to a drugs haul worth almost €2m, and the arrest of two suspected drugs couriers, according to the Evening Echo today.
At around 5pm last night gardaí moved in on an empty stationary car in Clonakilty. In the boot they discovered 100 1kg squares of packed cannabis resin, with a street value of €1m.
The car had been parked near the home of a man under surveillance for the last number of months.
Shortly after this swoop in west Cork, city gardaí checked out a car in an underground car park in a South Terrace apartment block.
Stored in that was 45kg of cannabis resin with a street value of €500,000, alongside €200,000 worth of cocaine and ecstasy tablets valued at €50,000.
As a result of both seizures, two men were arrested and were today being detained at Gurranabraher Garda Station.
One of the men is in his late 30s and from Tower, Blarney, while the other is in his late 40s and from the Ballinhassig area.
They were being questioned under the Drug Trafficking Act and can be held for up to seven days.
Yesterday’s arrests were part of a crackdown on drug suppliers in both the city and west Cork.
They were follow-up searches after the arrest of three men — one of them described as a major drugs baron — and seizures of €125,0000 of cocaine and cannabis, and €100,000 in cash in Ballinhassig last Wednesday.
Three men from the Clonakilty area were arrested as a result and today continued to be questioned at Bandon Garda Station.
Inspector Tom Myers of the Cork City Garda Drug Squad said he was ‘delighted’ with the results of the operation so far.
“I would like to say special thanks to the West Cork Garda Drug Squad who worked very hard to make this happen. We would like to warn all those involved in the distribution of drugs in Cork that our work is far from over.”
