Padraig Harrington cited exhaustion as the reason he failed to make the cut at Hoylake.

The Ryder Cup hopeful finished well off the pace with a total of 149 after a disappointing 74.

He said: “I was tired, just as I was yesterday, and made a lot of poor decisions.

“I have pushed myself the last few weeks and I am still feeling the effects of doing that.”
