Ronnie O’Sullivan is poised to win a record equalling title after a quickfire first session with John Higgins in the Regal Masters final at Glasgow.
When the first major final of the season resumes, O’Sullivan requires four of the remaining nine frames to win the title.
But it could have been even better for the world number one, who ended Stephen Hendry’s interest in the semi-finals on Saturday night.
O’Sullivan, beaten by Higgins in the 2001 final, led 5-1 helped by breaks of 51, 79, 52, 65 and 43.
Scotsman Higgins, who failed to pot a ball in the first two frames, could manage only a fourth frame century in reply.
However, the 27-year-old local favourite. a semi-final winner over Stephen Lee 24 hours earlier, gave himself a glimmer of hope in the closing stages of the opening session.
A couple of crucial errors by O’Sullivan allowed Higgins to reduce his deficit to 5-3 and keep alive his hopes of retaining the trophy.
