Date set for new North elections
Fresh elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly are to be held on Wednesday, November 26, Downing Street announced today.
A spokesman for Number 10 said: “The date has been confirmed as November 26.”
The announcement came as the IRA was expected to confirm a significant act of disarmament as part of a series of choreographed moves designed to kick start the peace process.
Minutes after Downing St confirmed the election date, Sinn Féin announced that party president Gerry Adams would speak in a Belfast hotel at around 10.30am.
The Northern Ireland Assembly and power-sharing government were suspended a year ago following allegations of IRA spying at Stormont.
Republicans have faced demands ever since for the IRA to issue an historical declaration that it will end all paramilitary action.
