Dublin man charged with IRA membership

A Dublin man arrested following a garda investigation in to the activities of dissident republicans has appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with membership of the IRA.

David Dodrill (aged 30), of Plunkett Avenue, Finglas is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation within the State namely the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA on July 13 last.

Detective Padraic McManus, of Blackrock garda station, told State Solicitor Mr Michael O’Donovan that he formally arrested the accused at Sweetman’s Avenue, Blackrock yesterday for the purposes of bringing him before the Special Criminal Court.

He told Mr O’Donovan that he explained to Dodrill in ordinary language that he was arrested because gardaí held a reasonable belief he was a member of an illegal organisation within the State.

Det Gda McManus said that Dodrill, who appeared before the non-jury court dressed in a navy fleece and black jeans, made no reply when the charge was read over to him.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Alison Lindsay and Judge William Hamill, remanded Dodrill in custody with liberty to apply for bail to appear in front of the court on July 28.
