Police detective Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is reeling from the death of his wife, numbing the pain with vodka.
He rarely plays by the rules, making him a prime target for Captain James Biggs (Hugh Laurie) in Internal Affairs. When Tom is implicated in the murder of his former partner he joins forces with an idealistic homicide detective to clear his name. Street Kings is an amalgam of writer-director David Ayers’s earlier films ('Training Day', 'Dark Blue', 'Harsh Times').
The dialogue is suitably snappy but fails to draw blood in the hands of a cast whose imposing physical presence dwarfs any acting prowess, with even corrupt captain Forest Whitaker more table-thumping fury than actual punch. Action sequences are uninspired, culminating in a showdown that sees one member of cast handcuffed to the scenery to prevent him chewing it.
