A mother confronted by armed robbers who tried to tie up her one-year-old baby boy has spoken of her shock after the ordeal.

Lilya Mallon and her seven-year-old son were tied up with masking tape during a raid on their home in the Sheetrim Road near Middletown, Co Armagh, on Saturday night. The thieves wore masks and carried handguns.

Ms Mallon, originally from the Ukraine, said she had been worried about her children’s safety.

“I knew myself that in a situation like this you need to be calm. It is just really sad what has happened in this house,” she told the BBC.

The raiders escaped with a small sum of cash from the victim’s purse after ransacking the house. Nobody was hurt.

The woman’s husband freed them when he returned to the country home a short time later. Local representatives said the community was shocked and have vowed to rally round the family.

They believe the gang may have been looking for someone else. Police are investigating the incident.
