A fire broke out early today in a makeshift barracks for construction workers in the Moscow region, killing 10 and injuring four, the Interfax news agency reported.

The blaze occurred in the town of Pashinskaya Poima, Interfax said, citing the Emergency Situations Ministry.

The workers were killed by the smoke from the fire, Ekho Moskvy radio reported.

Many Russian construction sites are equipped with metal containers where workers sleep between shifts.

Ekho Moskvy said that all the workers killed today were migrants from other parts of Russia or former Soviet republics.
