The Christian Brothers have told the Commission of Inquiry into Child Abuse that they have uncovered detailed files relating to the abuse of schoolboys dating back to the 1930s.

Br David Gibson told the commission today that the files were uncovered by an archivist who went to Rome last year to get documents for the child abuse investigation.

The files, which have yet to be handed over the commission, include written accounts from 30 boys at six schools about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Christian Brothers.

They also contain details of any action taken against brothers responsible for the abuse.

However, there is no evidence in the documents to suggest that help was offered to the victims or that the offences were reported to gardaí at the time.
