Bloom is producer Sean Walsh’s attempt to bring James Joyce’s Ulysses to our screens.
It’s essentially a day in the lives of three main characters, Leopold and Molly Bloom (Stephen Rea and Angeline Ball), and young poet Stephen Dedalus (Hugh O’Conor).
Set in 1904, it follows the main characters as they live out a day in their humdrum lives.
Molly is happy to mope around the house contemplating the complex relationship between men and women, while waiting for her lover to make his weekly visit.
Dedalus loses himself in deep and meaningful discussions about literature, while occupying the rest of his senses with plenty of drink.
His determination to live out the present to its fullest is his way of forgetting a painful past.
The fact that Walsh manages to create an interesting, if not exciting, film is a tribute to his skills.
