Junior Minister Noel Ahern has announced plans to appoint eight officers to encourage young people in marginalised areas of Dublin to take part in sport.

Mr Ahern said the officers would be appointed as part of a €400,000 funding allocation for disadvantaged areas of the capital.

He said he hoped the initiative would help young people to engage in sport rather than slipping into a life of crime and drugs.
