The family of John Kennelly - the Listowel travel agent who was missing in Paris for two months - have appealed for space and privacy now that he has returned to them.
In a statement released today, the family say Mr Kennelly is suffering from a medical condition which has resulted in actions uncharacteristic of him.
John Kennelly went missing during a visit to Paris with his wife and family on September 9 and there was no sighting of him until he showed up at a police station on Monday last.
He appears to have suffered some memory loss but he told French police that he had been abducted and sexually assaulted.
In today's statement his family say he is suffering from a condition which resulted in uncharacteristic behaviour.
They acknowledged that his actions have caused anguish and disruption to friends and family but insist that he is a loving husband and father - and a decent and honourable person.
Mr Kennelly is now receiving treatment for his condition and will continue to do so for as long as necessary.
In the meantime, his family are appealing for space and privacy for him to recover.
