A new survey has found that 15,000 Irish people have had their identity compromised online and that fears about identity theft could be costing Irish online business €250m a year.
The survey by IT management software company CA indicated that of the 1.4 million Irish adults who use the internet, 250,000 don't transact online.
One in three of these said that the reason is they don't trust online business.
Irish consumers trust medical institutions and banks most to protect their personal details, but have the least faith in online retailers and internet service providers.
Less than one in five people believe companies are doing enough to prevent personal identity theft.
One in 10 people pull out of a transaction without completing it - CA estimates this is costing online companies €250m a year.
