Premiership: Anelka closing in on Reds deal

Phil Thompson says Nicolas Anelka is edging ever closer towards a permanent Anfield deal.

Phil Thompson says Nicolas Anelka is edging ever closer towards a permanent Anfield deal.

The French striker was in sensational form as the Reds swept title rivals Newcastle United aside 3-0 at Anfield.

He set the opening goal up for Danny Murphy and was a thorn in Newcastle's side throughout the 90 minutes.

Thompson insisted the Reds won't be rushed into a decision on Anelka's future, but said: "He knows we are pleased with him and the good thing is he is making our mind up more than ever."

Speaking to the club's official website, he continued: "The lad has great ability and showed it (against Newcastle).

"You just wanted Nicolas to get the ball all the time. He was oozing confidence and the other lads felt more and more confident about giving him the ball.

"There is a lot more maturity about his play now than when he was with Arsenal. He is showing great awareness for his team-mates and his link up play is excellent.

"He had a purple patch just before the break when he was outstanding.

"This won't change the situation as regards a transfer. It is not good for Nicolas or anybody at the moment, as it's important he just keeps playing football."
