Geneva police step up airport sweeps as part of French probe

Geneva police have increased a deployment at the city's airport and are conducting a sweep of identity papers and other checks after receiving unspecified information in connection with an investigation in France.

Police spokesman Sylvain Guillaume-Gentil said the enhanced measures are not linked to the hostage-taking and killing of a priest at a church in Normandy on Tuesday, but would not comment further.

On its Facebook page, the Geneva police department said the measures are linked to information received that is being verified amid enhanced security with threats and concerns facing many parts of Europe.

Traffic in and around the airport was backlogged and travellers were told to expect delays.

Police did not specify when the extra measures would be lifted.
