Sheffield United have launched an investigation into an incident during Saturday’s Premiership match against Chelsea at Bramall Lane when a fan threw a plastic bottle at Frank Lampard.

The club were unaware that the incident had happened until Lampard revealed in the press what had taken place.

The Football Association are writing to the Yorkshire club to ask for further information and United safety officer Steve Hicks is to lead an investigation.

The Blades, who lost 2-0, are unlikely to face any action from the FA but will be urged to try to find and ban the culprit.
