French President Nicholas Sarkozy has branded today "a day of national disaster" after a gunman opened fire at a Jewish school in Toulouse, killing a teacher and three children.
The killer then fled the scene on a motorbike. It was the third similar attack in the region in less than a week.
Last Thursday, three French soldiers were gunned down at a cashpoint in a drive-by shooting, while a 30-year-old soldier was shot dead in a residential area last Sunday.
French prime minister Francois Fillon has now ordered that all schools and religious buildings be secured, saying the entire nation was the target of the shooting.
His order widens the reach of security measures. Authorities had previously said security would be stepped up at Jewish schools across the country.
