Boy, 14, had €1,700 worth of drugs and semiautomatic pistol

A 15-year-old boy has been given two years detention from Judge Desmond Hogan for possession of a semiautomatic pistol and €1,700 worth of drugs.

A 15-year-old boy has been given two years detention from Judge Desmond Hogan for possession of a semiautomatic pistol and €1,700 worth of drugs.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the firearm, €1,100 worth of heroin and €600 worth of cannabis at his home on January 29, 2009. He was 14 years old at the time.

Judge Hogan heard that the teenager has been on remand in a detention school and is doing well there. He also accepted that the boy had very supportive parents.

“He has been taken out of his home environment at a time when he should ideally be there and I am sure he misses it but he is doing very well in this detention school and I don’t think it is right to take him out of this structured routine,” Judge Hogan said.

He said he hoped that the boy would learn from his time in detention and “not fall into similar pitfalls”.

“There were older and wiser people involved in this crime and he can see that they are not before the court,” Judge Hogan said.
