Holmes eyeing Athens medals

Kelly Holmes insists she will do everything she can to satisfy her “desperate” hunger for a medal at next month’s Olympics following her resounding victory over 800 metres at the Norwich Union International in Birmingham.

Holmes was still drawing away from European champion Jolanda Ceplak when she cruised over the line 10m clear at the Alexander Stadium in a time of two minutes 00.46 seconds.

The 34-year-old has been selected for both the 800m and the 1,500m in Athens but is undecided which distance to run – despite having originally focused on the 1,500m with the shorter distance becoming a successful sideline.

She said: “I desperately want a medal and if by the time I get to the championships the 800m is going to be my best option then that is what I will do.

“Maybe if I start training for the 800 it will be detrimental so I keep doing what I am doing so if I go for it I will have the best of both worlds.

“I know something inside me will click and go ‘you have to go for it’ but as of yet is hasn’t happened.”
