Serbian second seed Novak Djokovic has beaten French 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 6-7 (11-9) 6-3 in the semi-finals to reach the Wimbledon men’s singles final.

Djokovic will become world number one next week as a result.

Djokovic battled back from a break down to claim the first set against Tsonga.

Tsonga was serving for the set at 5-4 before a bout of nerves got to the 12th seed, losing his serve on a fourth break point to take the game to a tense tie-break.

The Frenchman buckled under pressure once more in the breaker, planting into the net to lose it 7-4.

Tsonga’s edgy finish was in stark contrast to the way he started the set.

The 26-year-old was in complete command from the off, breaking in the opening game as Djokovic sent a forehand beyond the baseline.

Djokovic wasted a chance to break back in the next game and again in game eight when Tsonga held on.

But there was no reprieve at 5-4 when Tsonga double-faulted as Djokovic levelled before claiming the set on the tie-break.

Tsonga looked shaken by losing the first set and immediately found himself a break down in the second as Djokovic started to produce some of his best tennis.

The Serbian held well but Tsonga’s failure to land his first serves was leaving him exposed. Djokovic broke Tsonga for a second time in the fifth game of the set, with the world number 19 over-hitting a volley while off-balance at the net to trail 4-1.

Tsonga battled back to make it 30-30 in the sixth but Djokovic held his nerve to power down a big forehand and a nonchalant drop to go within one game of claiming the set.

Tsonga held to 15 but could not claim the break he needed in the following game and Djokovic took the set 6-2.

Tsonga gave Djokovic three early break points in the third set and he took the first when Tsonga cleared the baseline with a backhand.

Djokovic then held twice to move 4-2 up before Tsonga was in the air again - this time he landed his diving forehand well inside the court to take the seventh game.

Tsonga found some extra energy to stun Djokovic with a break in the eighth, firing down a forehand winner before pumping his fist in the air with joy.

Serving to stay in the set at 5-4 down, Djokovic showed nerves of steel to hold to love before claiming a second break in the next game.

Tsonga then remarkably broke back with a telling forehand to set up another tie-break.

Tsonga went long at the net to give Djokovic a match point but the Frenchman smashed home to rescue and take the tie-break to 6-6. Tsonga missed a set point moments later before saving another match point with a blistering ace.

Tensions mounted as Tsonga missed another set point, but he took another one on his serve moments later after Djokovic’s return went long, to take the tie-break 11-9 and keep his hopes alive.

The hard work Tsonga had put in at the end of the third set was wasted at the start of the fourth as Djokovic stormed into a 2-0 lead after breaking his opponent to love.

Tsonga took the third game to 30-30 but could not find a killer winner to break as Djokovic started to look comfortable.

The Serbian moved 4-1 ahead after holding his serve despite some increased pressure from Tsonga.

Serving to stay in the match, Tsonga hit a wonderful lob to take the fourth set into a ninth game.

Djokovic, knowing that a ticket to the final and a place at the top of the rankings was at stake, kept his cool though to earn two match points after Tsonga put a forehand into the net.

Tsonga then sent a rasping serve from Djokovic wide on match point and the Serbian collapsed to the floor in joy at his 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 6-7 (11/9) 6-3 win.
