Good Vibrations, the Beach Boys musical, will close on Sunday after a disappointing three-month Broadway run.
The show, which opened on February 2 to largely negative reviews, will have played 94 performances and six weeks of previews.
The Associated Press reviewer called the musical “bland”, adding that “pop classics alone can’t make musical theatre – especially when accompanied by a sketchy, almost non-existent plot, lame wit and meagre character development”.
Good Vibrations uses more than 30 Beach Boys favourites, including Fun, Fun, Fun, Help Me Rhonda, Surf City, Be True to Your School, Surfin’ USA and California Girls.
The show, directed and choreographed by John Carrafa, tells the story of three best buddies – plus one girl – who leave the East Coast of America for the golden surf of California.
