In the past few years, top division standing has been no guarantee of success in the Cup, and the minnows still around are bidding for some very serious upsets against an elite which has been described as "arrogant", despite one of the most exciting and unpredictable French Championship races in years.

French Cup holders Nantes have been drawn away to amateurs Carcassonne, Fontenay entertain Lyon, Auxerre must travel to Vannes, while Bastia are away to Reims.
