The Government today welcomed news of a new aerospace research centre which is expected to create 7,000 new jobs over the next five years.

Initial investment of £15 million was confirmed today to help set up the centre on a 100 acre site in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Aerospace giant Boeing will be a partner in the project, with the University of Sheffield and the local regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward.

Trade Minister Richard Caborn said the announcement was a ‘‘massive’’ vote of confidence in the region and added: ‘‘Boeing’s investment will bring highly skilled jobs to Yorkshire and act as a catalyst to encourage other blue chip companies to locate in the region.’’

Professor Bob Boucher, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: ‘‘The project builds on world-renowned expertise in metals and cutting technology which are integral to the aerospace and many other industries.

‘‘Boeing’s commitment to the Sheffield Centre will provide added impetus to the project.’’
