Five people, including two children, were killed by falling trees and debris as gale force winds caused chaos across Britain, emergency services said today.
One of the youngsters was pronounced dead at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital after being struck at Costessey, on the outskirts of Norwich, Norfolk.
A dead dog was also found at the scene.
In a separate incident, a boy believed to be aged about five, suffered serious head injuries and later died in Felixstowe, Suffolk.
Elsewhere in East Anglia, Norfolk Police, which has been receiving more than 1,000 weather-related calls, said a man died after being hit by a tree in Whittington, near King’s Lynn.
East Anglian Ambulance Service also revealed that a 13-year-old boy suffered a fractured leg after he was swept up into the air whilst flying a kite.
The youngster was taken to hospital after he was forced against a lamp post in Cambridge at 11.00am.
In Shropshire, one woman was killed and two others were taken to hospital with multiple injuries when a tree crushed their car.
Emergency services were called to the accident on the A41, near Market Drayton, Shropshire, to find two women trapped inside the vehicle.
Another woman had escaped from the car and was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford suffering from serious head and chest injuries.
The accident happened at around 9.20am today, outside Turnhill, as winds of up to 70mph hit the area, a fire service spokesman said.
Fire crews pulled one woman from the vehicle and she was airlifted to North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent with multiple injuries.
Another woman was later pulled out of the vehicle, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
In mid-Wales, a man died on the A40 near Brecon when a large branch hit the roof of his car.
Dyfed Powys Police said the accident happened near the village of Bwlch as he was driving towards Crickhowell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
