At least 30 student teachers were killed when the bus taking them home from a sporting event collided with a heavy truck, state radio said today.

The teachers, from the Masvingo Teachers Training College in southern Zimbabwe, were returning late last night after competing in sports activities in the capital Harare, the reports said.

They stayed on to watch a football match and began their 190 mile trip home shortly before nightfall.

The reports said the bus was involved in a head on collision with a truck about 35 miles from the southern provincial centre of Masvingo.

Bus crashes are common in Zimbabwe. Many are blamed on speeding on open roads as well as poor maintenance and shortages of new tyres and spare parts in the crumbling economy.
