The man charged with the kidnapping and murder of Sarah Payne has been remanded in custody.

Whiting, 42, of St Augustine Road, Littlehampton, West Sussex, was arrested in Kent on Wednesday and questioned by detectives investigating the death of eight-year-old Sarah.

About 20 police officers were lined up around the entrances and exits at the courthouse and three police vans were drawn up near the court.

The silver Mercedes people carrier in which Roy Whiting was driven to Bognor police station on Tuesday was already inside the precinct at Chichester Magistrates' Court as photographers and camera crews scrambled to line the walls of the court building.

An angry crowd of more than 200 people chased the vehicle carrying Whiting away from the court.

Members of the public shouted abuse as the van, escorted by police, sped away.

The van stopped 100 yards down the road at a level crossing. The crowd gave chase but it sped away before they could reach it.

One person was arrested and an egg was hurled at the vehicle.
