Britons still stranded in Bali sea drama

Fourteen people are stranded in high seas on a boat off Bali over 30 hours after a woman on board sent an SOS text message to London.

Fourteen people are stranded in high seas on a boat off Bali over 30 hours after a woman on board sent an SOS text message to London.

Reports have been issued from the Indonesian island that everyone on the boat had been rescued.

But Hamish Daniel of the British Embassy in Jakarta has confirmed 14 people remain on board the stricken vessel.

On the boat are six Britons, including the SOS sender Rebecca Fyfe, one New Zealander, one Australian and six Indonesians.

Mr Daniel says four of the British people jumped off the boat and paddled ashore on a surf board and are recovering in the village of Tanjung.

Mr Daniel said: "The four went to the local police station to raise the alarm and that is how we were able to get their precise location. The Australian Consul went from Bali to Lombok and he could see the boat from the shoreline anchored around 300 metres off shore.

"He was able to see the people on board and could see they seemed to be all right and had enough food and water on board."

He says a navy search and rescue vessel is on its way to help the people still on the boat.

It is believed smaller vessels are unable to successfully transfer the 14 from the boat because of the high seas.
