Stamina will be at a premium in the Grand National after further torrential rain made the ground at Aintree extremely testing.

The going on the Grand National course is officially described as soft, heavy in places.

However, clerk of the course Ian Renton was quick to scotch rumours that the great race would be postponed until Sunday if the weather deteriorated further.

He said: "We can take a lot more rain. There is no problem at the moment.

"There's no contingency plan to have the race on Sunday but if we did have to call it off we would look at having it on either Monday or Tuesday."
