It is believed that a botched mortar attack may have caused an overnight blast in Derry that has led to the evacuation of scores of homes.

It is believed that a botched mortar attack may have caused an overnight blast in Derry that has led to the evacuation of scores of homes.

The explosion centred on a van in the city's May St, near a British army barracks.

The area remains sealed off and army bomb disposal experts are expected to be on the scene for some time.
