Thousands of people opposed to plans for a high voltage electricity power line in the border area today stepped up their campaign with a huge protest.

Around 2,500 demonstrators from several counties descended on the historic Bective Abbey in Co Meath to form a massive human chain spelling out the slogan 'No Pylons Here'.

The event, organised by campaign group 'North East People Against Pylons', is the first major protest in a series of events to block the overhead power line.

They warned of possible health risks and damage to the local heritage and property values if the proposed 400KV line goes ahead.

Electricity transmission company EirGrid are assessing three routes for the line through either the west or middle of Co Meath or Cavan before linking up with the network in the North.

Protesters arrived at the abbey from Armagh and Tyrone in the North and counties Cavan, Meath and Monaghan.

A decision is to be announced early in the New Year and a Dáil debate is also being planned.
