Sinn Féin’s leading officials in Derry have condemned nationalists involved in sectarian attacks against Protestants and described the attacks as unacceptable.
In an open letter to the citizens of Derry, Martin McGuinness, Mitchel McLaughlin, Mary Nelis and 10 Sinn Féin councillors issued a statement condemning the attacks.
"Attacks that took place on Tuesday and other recent times on the Fountain Estate by a number of young thugs intent on doing damage are unacceptable and must not be tolerated. These individuals are not republicans or nationalists and should not be given the dignity of such descriptions," the statement said.
Mr McGuinness and his colleagues also urged nationalist and loyalist community leaders in Derry to put aside their political differences and work together in the interests of their respective communities.
However, hours after the statement was published last night, fresh clashes broke out in Nailor’s Row.
Police officers who moved in to make an arrest were surrounded by around 40 youths throwing bottles, stones and other missiles.
One officer fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd. Nobody was injured.
