David Beckham has reportedly spent £150,000 (€245,000) on a heavily-armoured Mercedes that can withstand gunfire.

It has inch-thick windows, a reinforced floor and an airtight passenger compartment in case of a gas attack.

The unusual additions to the car have been made to protect his wife Victoria and son Brooklyn.

The car also has an explosion-proof petrol tank and modified wheels which can be driven even if the tyres are hit by gunfire, reports the London Evening Standard.

The England captain already has a fleet of cars including a Ferrari Maranello, a Lincoln Navigator, a BMW X5 and a convertible Mercedes SLK.

David and Victoria, who are expecting their second child, are thought to be at risk following a series of security scares.
