Soccer: Giggs could be back to face Leeds

Ryan Giggs' hamstring injury is not as serious as first feared and he should be back training with Manchester United next week.

Giggs will miss Sunday's Premiership showdown with Arsenal at Old Trafford, but he could be in contention for the trip to Leeds on Saturday week.

When Giggs went off during United's 1-1 draw with Valencia on Tuesday, it was feared he could be out for two weeks.

But assistant-manager Steve McClaren claims the club have learnt over the years how to treat his recurring hamstring problems.

"The good thing about Ryan is that we've identified the problem," he said.

"When it does occur, it's shorter term than maybe, say two or three years ago when he would be out for weeks.

"Now we're looking at a matter of days and we are hoping Ryan will be back in training next week."

McClaren admits United will miss the Welsh winger against Arsenal, but he has no doubts that they can plug the gap.

"He wins you games," he said. "He's got the pace and the ability to penetrate, cause teams problems as you saw in the first quarter of an hour against Valencia and in the first game over there.

"He's an exceptional player, but we've got exceptional players in the squad who can come in so we readjust and carry on."
