I think everyone got a newfound respect for candles after the Beast from the East went messing with the electrics. This is the Belgravia Lux candle from Max Benjamin’s Ilum Collection. It’s €96, but we’re talking 110 hours of burn time, it’s hand poured, 100% natural wax and most importantly, made in Ireland. If you’re a candle buff, the top notes are plum, pomegranate, raspberry, rhubarb. If you’re not, it’s probably safe to say it smells rather nice. This piece by Czech abstract artist Tereza Stervoa aka Tyda, is title ‘Hooked on You’. Tyda has been living in Cork for over ten years and is self taught. She tells me that the title of this piece was inspired by art itself, art being her addiction. She uses a variety of techniques to create a range of textures, mainly using layers of acrylic, charcoal, graphite, pastels and spray paint. We love the result, this is 50*40cm mixed media on canvas, priced at €250 and is on exhibition at the moment with 6 other pieces in the Scrypt Cafe Bar in the Triskel until the end of April. Do go and check it out if you can, it’s so important to support these incredible local artists. Another nod to our patron saint is this long army green coat hook shelf from April and the Bear. I really love the top shelf for extra storage. In my la la land version, there’d be a single fern, picking up the green tone and a carefully chosen frame with a perfect portrait of the family. In real life, it would be completely covered in miscellaneous rubbish and one forlorn broken umbrella. It’s good to have goals though. It’s €205 and available from www.aprilandthebear.com
