Mum's the word: 12 great gift ideas for your mammy this Mother's Day

Esther N McCarthy offers some gift ideas for all the marvellous matriarchs this March

Mammys. They’re great. Most of the time. We don’t need a day in March to remind us of this but if you have young kids, an excuse to demand a lie-in on a Sunday is welcome. If you have teens, a whole day of not rolling their eyes at you is gift enough and if your children or your mammy don’t live with you anymore, it’s a lovely time of year to meet up and catch up.

It was JK Rowling who said “Love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark... to have been loved so deeply... will give us some protection forever.” So for Harry, and to mark the day for all the magic mums out there, we’ve rounded up some gift ideas to suit every pocket.

1. Lighting the way

This Jack & Jill Celtic Candle is a limited edition, just for Mother’s Day. Your mum will be in with the chance to win an actual diamond necklace, too. Inside each Jack & Jill candle is a capsule which contains a costume diamond pendant, but two of the candles contain real diamond pendants, valued at €1,000 each, donated by Loyes Diamonds of Baggot St, Dublin. Proceeds go to fund home nursing care for sick babies and children. ‘Find a Diamond Candle’ are on sale at Jack & Jill shops for €19.95 and from www.jackandjill.ie

2. Spa-cial offer

If your mother is due a weekend away, Co Wicklow could be the right spot. To celebrate the arrival of Elemis Superfood range into the spa at the five-star Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort, it has a special offer going at the moment. Book the 70-minute Advanced Superfood Pro-Radiance Facial, for €105 (reduced from €120) and get 20% off any of the Elemis Superfood range. All the products are vegan-friendly and the offer is

available from Monday to Thursdays until April 27. Find out more at druidsglenresort.com.

3. Power on

Or you could treat the mammy to a relaxing overnight stay at Powerscourt Hotel — and go along with her. The five-star hotel has an offer on from March 22-29 that includes overnight accommodation in a twin room, based on two people sharing, full Irish breakfast, as well as two tickets to Powerscourt Gardens. Nothing like a bit of quality time together, right? From €120pp.

4. Boxing clever

Forget the flowers and think outside — and inside — the box. Baba Box has come out with a gorgeous, unique range of pampering boxes. This is an independent Irish mum and baby business, started by Dublin mum and entrepreneur Sarah Walsh. Every box includes a different selection of surprises to spoil a new mum, including Skin & Tonic Calm Balm, Bean & Goose luxury chocolate, bath salts, organic teas, and the Handmade Soap Company hand creams. Prices start from €41 (+P&P) for a New Mum ‘Relax’ Gift Box to €87 (+P&P) for a Mum & Baby Deluxe Gift Box. They can be delivered directly to you to give in person or straight to the new mum’s door. Order before March 7 for delivery in time for Mother’s Day. Visit bababox.ie for more details.

5. Where’s me jumper?

Prepare to be pretty in pink with this luxurious paloma cashmere blend jumper, it’s €215 from Magee of Donegal on South Anne St in Dublin or from magee1866.com

6. Have a Field Day

Irish company Field Day has a range of scents, with everything from candles and diffusers to drawer liners and scented sachets. There’s also a range of beauty products that carry through the fragrance range, hand cream, hand wash, and soap. The best-selling fragrance in the range is Wild Rose, but I’ve picked the sea diffuser. Pick your mammy’s favourite scent at Field Day stockists nationwide or at fielddayireland.ie.

7. Kitted out

This Liz Earle Daily Routine Introduction Kit is a beauty. It includes the product getting rave reviews from beauty experts — the Skin Repair Light Moisturiser. It’s €28 in Boots nationwide and boots.ie

8. Feet up

With all this mad weather recently, nothing says I love you like a nice snuggly pair of slipper boots. Make sure Mammy puts her feet up while she’s rocking this floral pair from TK Maxx.

9. We’re all ears

You don’t have to spend a fortune to give your mum a thoughtful gift. We spotted these cute, on-trend earrings in Oasis for €12. oasis-stores.com

10. Fetching stuff

Irish entreprenuer Lucy McPhail is the force behind a new online beauty emporium, Fetch Beauty. She has handpicked ten hot beauty brands exclusively for her site, which is exciting news for Irish customers. Lucy used to work as a beauty buyer for Harrods and has brought her expertise to create a niche beauty concept in Ireland. This Dani glowing skin perfector is a tinted illuminator, by Lancer. It’s €98, and the site offers complimentary express shipping on this product. Find out more at fetchbeauty.com

11. Book it

There’s nothing like a good book — and the time to sit down to devour it. We couldn’t wait for Clonakilty author Louise O’Neill’s new tome to hit the shelves last week. It’s called Almost Love and the reviews are, unsurprisingly, rave. Published by Quercus, it’ll be available in all book stores. See quercusbooks.co.uk for more.

12. Bringing it ‘Home’

Give a gift that will last forever, a piece of art — or a more affordable limited-edition print. ‘At Inchydoney’ was the first painting Cora Murphy made after landing back in Ireland in 2007, after 15 years overseas. The contemporary landscape painter is celebrating her ‘Tenniversary’ in Cork with Home, a book reflecting on a decade painting in Ireland. The book includes this painting and 20 more, all are available as limited-edition prints. Details on coramurphy.com
