He was removed to the Mater University Hospital where he later passed away from his injuries.

One youth has since been arrested by investigating gardaí. At the time of going to print, he was being detained under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Mountjoy Garda Station.

Local councillor, Neil Ring, said locals are saddened that a young life has been taken: "The whole family are devastated because of this. What’’s worrying me is if some retaliation might be taken.

"We just don’’t want any more feuds brewing up in the north inner city, or anywhere else in the country."

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post mortem is expected to take place in due course.

The scene of the incident was sealed off for a technical examination and an incident room has been established at Mountjoy Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to any persons who were in the area, who may have witnessed the incident or can assist Gardaí to contact them at Mountjoy Garda Station on 01 6668600, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
