A man is in Garda custody after a young woman was killed in a fatal stabbing in Kilkenny city last night.
The 28-year-old victim was attacked in the shop where she worked in the Market Cross centre at about 8.30pm.
She was rushed to St Luke's Hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman is originally from a village outside Kilkenny, but had lived in Kilkenny for a number of years.
A 27-year-old man was arrested after a Garda search of the area. He is being questioned at Kilkenny garda station.
Kilkenny People journalist Mary Cody said the city was in shock.
She described the woman who was stabbed as "a really lovely girl, very well-liked. The whole city is in complete shock."
Part of the shopping centre where the attack occurred has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination.
It is understood CCTV from around the time of the incident is also to be examined. Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.
