A young man has been rescued from the flooded River Shannon in Castleconnell, Co Limerick.

Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to the scene about 12.50am this morning.

Emergency services said they received an alert of a person in the river near the playground at Ferrybank, Castleconnell.

Three units of the Limerick City & County Fire Service, with swift water rescue technicians on board, were dispatched to the scene.

"The young male, aged 18, was removed from the river by friends as the fire service arrived," said a source.

"Upon arrival, the fire service administered emergency first aid due to the young man suffering from seizures and the effects of immersion in the cold water," the source added.

He was removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
