Public-sector workers earn €273 a week more on average than their private sector counterparts, according to CSO figures.

Weekly wages for both sectors went up last quarter.

On average, the weekly wage in the public sector is 35% higher than the private sector.

Those in private companies earn €642 a week on average while those in public bodies earn €916.

Weekly wages last quarter rose by 1.8% in the private sector when compared to the previous year - compared to a 1% rise in public jobs.

Overall, it shows the average working week was 32 hours long and that people earn an average of €22 an hour.

The CSO figures highlight that there is still a significant wage gap between the public and private sector.
