Drivers are being warned to take extra care on the road this weekend as weather warnings are in place.

Met Éireann have issued wind alerts which come into effect from 11am this morning.

An Orange warning is in effect in Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, where gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour are likely on exposed coasts and headlands this evening.

A yellow wind warning is in place for much of Leinster, the east and the midlands.

The Road Safety Authority is urging motorists to watch out for vulnerable road users including pedestrians and cyclists.

"The brunt of the winds will be felt in the west and northwest of the country," a Met Éireann meteoroligst said, "mainly on coastal distrcits, but also inland."

He said the lower level of threat applied to many other areas, and both would continue into Sunday morning.

Wind Warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo

STATUS YELLOW:

Wind Warning for Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Westmeath, Meath, Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.
